Butler Continues to Target Florida

Butler Continues to Target Florida

Over the past 6 years Butler has recruited the Tampa Bay area extremely well, signing Shawn Vanzant, Khyle Marshall, and Devontae Morgan. Butler looks to continue that success at Berkeley (FL) Preparatory.

Brad Stevens and company are back at it again in Florida.

This time the target is 6-foot 5, 180 pound wing Justin Gray.

Gray helped Berkeley (FL) Prep to a 22-8 record and a trip to the Class 4A Finals.

After an impressive season and solid AAU tour last year, Gray has garnered interest from many programs around the country.

He reports interest from Butler, Miami (FL), FGCU, Cornell, Tulsa, Purdue, Tulsa, Wisconsin, College of Charleston, VCU, and South Florida.

Despite losing in the Class 4A Final to Boca Raton St. Andrews 51-44, Gray continues to work in the off-season.

InsideTheDawgPound caught up with Roderick Brooks, a coach from Gray's AAU team (Florida Select), to get an update on Gray's recruitment.

"Justin is working very hard this summer and he's doing great things in the classroom as well," Brooks told IDP. "He's working on his ball-handling and on the ball defense this summer. He's good at rebounding, pull-up jumper, team defense, and free-throws, just about how we want it, but there's always room for improvement."

While many players may fit Butler style on the court, they always aren't a fit off the court, but Coach Brooks thinks Gray is a quality basketball player, but also a great person off the court.

Brooks described Gray as, "A well grounded kid that only has school and basketball on his mind."

Brooks, Gray, and Florida Select will head north to Indianapolis, where they will take part in an AAU tournament in July.

"You'll find out what this young man is all about," Gray said.

Gray has started to narrow down his list a little according to Brooks.

"He has a top 3," Brooks said. "I can tell you that one happens to have a ‘B' in it and let's just say that your fine university is very high on his list."
