NEW YORK (NY) - Butler's (14-17, 4-14) frustrating first season in the Big East came to a close at Madison Square Garden as the Bulldogs fell to Seton Hall (17-16, 6-12) in the 1st Round of the Big East Tournament.
The game was a microcosm of the season for Butler. There were times when players like Khyle Marshall, Andrew Chrabascz, and Kellen Dunham made great plays and Butler looked like they could advance to the 2nd round, but in the end, the Bulldogs came up just short in another close game.
Seton Hall center Gene Teague dominated the paint connecting on 6/10 field goals and finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Fuquan Edwin and Brian Oliver each added 10 points for the Pirates.
Khyle Marshall played extremely well in his final game in a Butler uniform. He finished with 22 points (10/15 FG) and 7 rebounds. The senior was dominant at times and used an expanded arsenal, including a midrange jump shot, to keep Butler close throughout the game.
Sophomore Kellen Dunham had a rough shooting night. He finished 2/10 from the floor and finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists.
Alex Barlow also couldn't get things going in the Butler backcourt. The junior guard finished 1/11 from the field including 1/9 from three. He had just 3 points and 6 rebounds.
Butler jumped out to an early lead on the Pirates, who then went on a 7-0 run to grab the lead early in the 1st half. It was a back and forth 1st half and the Pirates took a 23-22 lead into halftime.
In the 2nd half Seton Hall began to build a lead and stretched the differential to 45-32 midway through the 2nd half.
Butler then began to chip away. The Bulldogs slowly shrunk the lead and drew within one, 51-50, after a steal and dunk from Dunham with 47 seconds left.
Seton Hall would miss the ensuing three point attempt, but Dunham penetrated and his pass was deflected away and stole by the Pirates with 5 seconds left.
Brandon Mobley missed a free throw and Miller called timeout. Alex Barlow collected a pass from Andrew Chrabascz and his running half court attempt sailed left as time expired.
Marshall finishes his career with 1,373 points (17th all-time) and 610 rebounds (16th all-time).
Butler shot 40.4% from the field including 2/18 (11.1%) from three, while Seton Hall shot 39.6% from the field including 5/20 (25%) from three.
Kameron Woods scored 7 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. The double figure rebounding mark was the 20th of his career.
NOTES:Elijah Brown scored 5 points (1/4 3PT) from the bench...Erik Fromm had 2 points and 6 rebounds while fouling out in his final game for Butler...Andrew Chrabascz displayed nice footwork in scoring 7 points (3/5 FG)...Butler shot just 6/13 (46.2%) from the free throw line.
It was over when...Alex Barlow's half court heave fell sailed left of the rim and fell to the floor.
Stat of the Game: 6/13 - Butler's free throw shooting mark. The Bulldogs struggled all season from the free throw line and tonight was no different.
